Lip Surgery - Procedure Description SouthfieldPhoto Series: Reducing Gum Exposure

A less technical treatement discussion is available here.Our patient had a significant history of an unusual maxillary connective tissue anomoly that affected the positioning and movement of his upper lip, especially when smiling broadly. During the initial comprehensive consult, our patient learned from Dr. Nemeth that certain periodontic tissue surgeries could be performed that would create connective tissue relationships between the upper jaw and upper lip that would be more normalized. These changes would effectively reduce his gummy smile appearance. 
Understandably, the patient was quite excited about the prospect of making connective tissue changes that he and many dentists had assumed were not possible.He was anxious to begin treatments that would create a smile and overall appearance that he had wanted for a long time. To assure absolute comfort and relaxation for the patient and provide the best possible treatment environment for Dr. Nemeth, the patient was provided IV Sedation, along with Versed and Valium medications.  As can be seen in the 3rd and 4th photos of our surgery treatment series, excess tissue was removed from between the upper periodontal tissues and upper lip.  In this 4th mid-treatment photo the actual process performed by Dr. Nemeth for suturing the needed areas that would be the foundation of the lip movement procedure.  5th picture was taken at the time completion of suturing. Specialized Ethicon suturing material was used, a popular periodontic surgery technology used in our office.  6th picture shows the post operative treatment result, several weeks after surgery. Note how nicely and evenly the tissues have healed. There is little or no apparent indication that this treatment was ever provided. 
The upper arch support structures now provide more normalized lip movements for the patient. Most importantly, dental function was, attesting to the degree of success and cosmetic result desired by the patient.The final post operative treatment picture shows off the dramatic effect that Lip Lowering surgical procedures can have for a patient. Our patient was thrilled with the results and now has a smile that not only does a good job of showing off his teeth but with smile behavior proportions and a smile line that now "fit" the patients facial characterstics and physical jaw relationships.
