Gummy Orthodontics - Crown Lengthening SouthfieldOur patient, a young 14 year old boy undergoing traditional orthodontic teeth straightening had begun to experience severe gingival overgrowth.Periodontal Gum Tissue Reshaping
As orthodontic treatments continued, the gingival overgrowth condition steadily worsened. The adjacent preoperative treatment photo represents the extent to which our patient's gum tissues had grown.Crown Lengthening and Gingival Recontouring procedures were recommended and performed by Dr. Nemeth, on a tooth by tooth basis. To assure absolute comfort during treatment, IV sedation was used, along with Valium and Versed. The medications were successful in creating a near perfect treatment environment. The patient was totally relaxed and Dr. Nemeth was able to perform the precision treatments with no reports of discomfort. 
Dr. Nemeth performed all treatments with a scalpel, creating tooth height and gingival arches that created a cosmetic result that nearly approximates what Mother Nature normally provides.The adjacent post operative picture shows the natural appearance of what are now normal tooth size relationships on both the upper and lower (maxillary and mandibular, respectively) arches. This cosmetic treatment plan was performed shortly before orthodontic treatment ended to assure a great looking cosmetic result after the braces are removed. Performing this procedure too early, for some patients, can result in the overgrowth condition to occur again.
