Periodontal Surgery Southfield MichiganFrenectomy Surgical Procedure
A frenum is a fold of tissue or muscle connecting the lips, cheek or tongue to the jawbone. As can be seen in the adjacent pre-operative photo, our patient has an excess of this tissue that is to be surgically removed, via a frenectomy.Quite commonly, a frenum can be attached too high on the gums which can cause spaces between the teeth. In extreme cases, this condition can interfere with or thwart normal eruption of tooth structures. Scalpel versus Laser Frenum Removal
There are two methods for performing a frenectomy. Some doctors use a surgical scalpel to excise (remove) the undesireable tissue. In our office, Dr. Nemeth uses state-of-the-art laser technology to perform common frenectomies.Precision levels of laser treatment are controlled by the doctor. The treatment requires only topical anesthesia in most cases. Because of the cauterizing features of Dr. Nemeth's lasers, excessive bleeding is eliminated. The need for sutures is practically eliminated for most patients with laser surgery. The second photo in our treatment series shows, for this patient, the need for periodontic suturing was eliminated.
Patients report little, if any, feelings of discomfort immediately following completion of laser treatment. The entire procedure was performed in under fifteen (15) minutes. The final post operative treatment photo shows well healed tissues between the lower lip and gingiva. The patient was very pleased with the outcome. Frenectomy TypesFrenectomies are routinely performed by Dr. Nemeth for different populations of patients and for different oral health conditions.Denture wearers sometimes undergo the removal of excess frenum tissue to facilitate ease and comfort for using their prosthodontic appliances. Labial frenectomies are often provided to children and young adults who have discomfort or possibly speech related problems due to an extra fold of tissue under the tongue.
